The Special Learning Center’s center-based program is especially designed for children with varying developmental delays and disabilities. In this program, our classrooms offer a warm, caring environment where individualized and appropriate learning activities for each child are offered. Morning (8:30 a.m. to 11:30 a.m.) and afternoon (12:30 p.m. to 3:30 p.m.) classroom sessions are available.

Students are grouped by developmental and age levels into early childhood classes. Student/teacher ratios are kept to a minimum to maximize each student’s progress and help prepare students for entry into public school or their next educational placement.

Qualified and experienced staff:

Our classroom teachers are certified in early childhood special education. Physical, occupational and speech therapists are licensed and registered in their respective fields by the State of Missouri. Our paraprofessionals assist in classroom activities, attend a minimum of 12 hours of training each year, and have years of experience in working with children with special needs.

Team approach to treatment:

Our therapists and teachers work collaboratively with each other and with parents and other providers to ensure continuity of treatment for each child.

Sensory-based curriculum:

Through the specially designed curriculum, the staff at the Special Learning Center emphasizes sensory integration, or the use of all senses, to stimulate the children’s senses as they explore the world around them. Total communication, which includes a combination of sign language, speech and other communication techniques, also helps with language development by providing a visual language that is understandable to children.

We blend classroom instruction and therapy in one environment, which helps the overall development of each child. Children without delays are incorporated in our program and serve as role models for their peers. Parent involvement and input is also encouraged.

Transportation program:

Staffed with a driver and an aide, our buses transport many students in the center-based program to and from the Special Learning Center. The vehicles are also used to transport children to area sites for field trips.
